How to be yourself at work as an apprentice

Starting as an apprentice is an exciting time, but it can also be nerve-wracking. You’re learning the ropes, meeting new people, and trying to make a good impression- all while figuring out how to be true to yourself. It’s easy to feel like you need to fit in or be someone you’re not, but being authentic is one of the best things you can do for your growth and success.

Know your strengths and interests

As an apprentice, you’re there to learn but that doesn’t mean you don’t have valuable strengths and interests already. Understanding what you are good at and what excites you can help you be your best self for the job.

Focus on what you enjoy

Whether that’s problem-solving, working with your hands, or interacting with customers, knowing what you enjoy can guide you toward tasks that make you feel fulfilled.

Use your strengths

Don’t be afraid to lean into what you know you’re good at. Your strengths are part of what makes you unique and can help you stand out positively.

Stay curious and open-minded

Being an apprentice is all about learning, so keeping an open mind and staying curious is key.

Ask questions

Don’t hesitate to ask questions, even if they seem basic. Asking questions is essential to help you fully understand your role.

Embrace new experiences

You might be asked to try things outside your comfort zone. See these as opportunities to learn about yourself and what you enjoy – you might surprise yourself.

Build genuine relationships

The people you work with during your apprenticeship can have a big impact on your experience at work.

Be friendly and approachable

A smile and a simple “Good morning” can go a long way.

Be honest

If you don’t know something or make a mistake, own up to it. Honesty builds trust and shows your willingness to learn.

Don’t be afraid to show your personality

It’s easy to feel like you need to hide your personality to fit in, but your uniqueness is what makes you so valuable.

Share your ideas

Even if you are new, your perspective can be fresh and valuable. Never be afraid to share your thoughts or ideas.

Stay true to your style

Whether it’s how you present yourself or how you approach your work, let your personality shine through. It’s what makes you, you.

Learn from feedback

Feedback is a big part of any role, and it’s a great tool for growth.

Take feedback positively

Use feedback to improve, but don’t let it doubt yourself. Remember everyone is always learning.

Balance growth and authenticity

It’s important to grow and adapt, but not at the cost of losing who you are. Keep what makes you special and let that guide your development.

Celebrate your progress

Remember to celebrate the small wins along your journey.

Acknowledge your achievements

Take time to recognise your progress whether it’s mastering a new skill or building a relationship. It’s the small things that count.

Stay positive

The more you stay true to yourself the more you’ll enjoy your apprenticeship and the opportunities it brings.

Being yourself as an apprentice is more than just performing well—it’s about developing into the best version of yourself. By holding onto your values, embracing new learning experiences, and creating real connections, you’ll not only thrive in your apprenticeship but also pave the way for a rewarding career. So, stay true to who you are—that’s exactly who you’re meant to be.
