Why investing in training shows your team that they matter

Many changes have occurred in our workplaces, from more employees now working from home to an increase in hybrid working schemes, but one thing hasn’t changed: the need to feel valued. Salary and benefits matter, of course, but employees are looking for something more – an opportunity to grow. When a business invests in training, it sends a powerful message to its employees.

At Kiwi Education, we see this every day. Apprenticeships and short courses aren’t just about building technical skills: they’re about showing teams that their growth and wellbeing are priorities. And that’s why training has such a big impact on motivation, loyalty, and success.

Training builds loyalty and retention

We all know that replacing staff is expensive. Recruitment takes time, money, and resources, and when talented people leave, they take their knowledge with them. According to CIPD research, one of the top reasons employees stay is because they see a clear path for development within their organisation.

By offering apprenticeships or structured training, you’re giving employees that clear pathway, with 80% of employers: have seen a significant increase in employee retention according to Swarm Training CIC

Training boosts confidence and engagement

When employees gain new skills, they gain confidence. That confidence translates into better performance, more initiative, and a stronger sense of purpose. It’s not about ticking boxes or hitting targets- it’s about creating an environment where people feel capable and valued. With A large majority of apprentices report experiencing personal growth (78%) and increased confidence (62%) as key benefits of their apprenticeships according to the Association of Apprentices

An apprentice learning leadership skills, for example, doesn’t just improve their own performance- they contribute to the team with fresh energy and ideas.

Training is a retention tool as valuable as pay rises

It’s tempting to think that pay rises are the only way to keep staff happy, but that’s not always the case. Research consistently shows that employees value personal and professional development opportunities just as highly. Training is a perk that pays off twice: staff feel valued, and the business benefits from their new skills.

Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers

One of the biggest myths we tackle is that apprenticeships are only for young people starting out. In reality, apprenticeships can be used to upskill staff at all levels- from admin to your operations team. This means you can upskill your entire team without huge costs, thanks to the growth and skills levy and government funding. It’s a cost-effective way to strengthen your workforce while showing staff they’re worth the investment.

Training is a message of trust

At the heart of it, training is about trust. It’s about telling your people: we see your potential, we want you to grow, and we’re ready to help you get there. When an employee feels trusted and valued, they give back in loyalty, energy, and commitment.
