Understanding Gateway in your Apprenticeship

If you’re on an apprenticeship, you may have heard the term ‘Gateway’. But what does it actually mean?

What is Gateway?

Gateway is the crucial stage between completing your training and beginning your End Point Assessment (EPA). It serves as a checkpoint to ensure you’re fully prepared before your final assessment.

Why is Gateway important?

The Gateway period allows your employer, training provider and yourself to confirm that you’ve completed your on-programme training. It ensures you’ve gained the necessary Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) to move forward with confidence into your End Point Assessment.

What are the requirements for Gateway?

To proceed through Gateway and take your End Point Assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

Training hours – You must have logged the required number of training hours.

Completed work – Any coursework or projects, such as your portfolio, must be finished.

Programme duration – You need to have been on your apprenticeship programme for at least the minimum required time.

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours – you must have developed and demonstrated the necessary competencies outlined in your apprenticeship standard.

Mandatory qualifications – If your apprenticeship requires any additional qualifications, these must be completed before proceeding.

How will I be assessed?

Each apprenticeship has a unique EPA process, outlined in an official assessment plan. Every EPA must include at least two distinct assessment methods, which may include:

  • Practical assessments
  • Projects
  • Interviews and presentations
  • Written or multiple-choice tests
  • Workplace observations

Before starting an apprenticeship, it’s important to understand how you will be assessed and what key areas will be evaluated. You can review the assessment plan for your specific apprenticeship on the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education website.

Who conducts the assessment?

Your EPA will be carried out by an independent End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), separate from your training provider.

Preparing for Gateway

To make your time in Gateway as smooth as possible make sure to keep track of your progress, communicate regularly with your employer and training provider, and ensure that all required elements are completed. By doing so, you’ll be in the best position you can be to succeed in your End Point Assessment and complete your apprenticeship!

Gateway is a milestone that shows how far you’ve come and ensures you’re ready for the final stage of your apprenticeship journey.
